Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was one of the pioneers of Finnish industrial art who gained international recognition in the years following the Second World War. This was due to his broad aesthetic scope and his refined exhibition designs. Originally trained as a sculptor, Tapio Wirkkala was to give Finnish design objects a completely new dimension, objects which today are highly priced among collectors world wide. Wirkkala's work ranged from exlusive creations of art glass to massproduced everyday objects. He was without doubt a designer whose work broke down the boundaries between the arts, crafts and the visual arts.
