Berndt Friberg

Berndt Friberg (1899-1981) was born into a family with ceramic traditions, his grandfather and uncles all worked for Höganäs stoneware factory. Friberg left Höganäs after five years of training and after working at smaller factories in Denmark and Sweden, Friberg came to Gustavsberg in 1934 as a thrower for Wilhelm Kåge. He soon became indespensible and was always asked to take on technically difficult objects. Friberg felt he had much to learn on forms and glazes from the old Chinese masters. He became a glaze specialist by trial and errors and is said to have had the recipes to over 200 glaze variations. He sprayed the glazes on the vessles, knowing fairly accurately how the chemical composition would react in the kiln, calculating as few surprises as possible. Friberg truly became the master of his medium, acclaimed by critics and public alike.
